Eagle Pass’ location gives it border town advantages for the import and export of manufactured goods to Mexico and for the distribution of goods to the rest of the United States. Eagle Pass is the fastest route between San Antonio and Mexico and is often referred to as "La Puerta de México" or Mexico's Door. The border is secure with capable personnel, and will only improve with a new 2-mile concrete barrier. In a downtown survey conducted in 2019 by Eagle Pass Economic Development, 81.6% of respondents felt safe at night in the Downtown District.
Eagle Pass’ relationship with its sister city, Piedras Negras in Coahuila, Mexico, is strong, friendly, and safe. In fact, INEGI’s National Public Safety Survey ranks Piedras Negras as the safest border location and the fifth safest city in Mexico. Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras are connected by two international bridges, and each March they celebrate the International Friendship Festival to honor their long history of collaboration. It’s a highly-anticipated event celebrating friendship, filled with culture and fun activities. The high point of the festivities is the Abrazo — Spanish for “embrace” — where people from both countries line up to hug one another in the middle of the border-spanning international bridge.
